Coconut Mele

The recipe for this drink has been sitting in our email archive for about a decade. Recently found and dusted off, Coconut Mele is ready for its return. Sunshine was pleasantly surprised how unique this tropical style drink tastes as we all completely forgot about it.

The word Mele in Hawaiian means chant or song or poem. In this libation the word is an ode to the subtle and complex flavors of the coconut when used correctly. Coconut milk is rich and creamy. Coconut liquor is sweet and toasty. Lime balances the sweetness and adds a bit of tart that isn’t expected. And orange blossom water provides a sweet floral note that sits in the background and lets the coconut remain the star.

1.5 oz. Coconut Rum, Clement Mahina Coco is great in this recipe

.75 oz. Silver Jamaican Rum

.5 oz. Cruzan Blackstrap

1.5 oz. Coconut Milk (we use lite canned coconut milk)

.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

2-3 drops Orange Blossom Water

Combine everything adding the lime last with ice in a shaker and shake immediately. Shaking for at least 30 seconds helps to provide dilution and emulsify the coconut milk. Pour into a coconut mug filled with crushed ice and garnish with a lime wedge. Add toasted coconut flakes to make it EXTRA. This drink sometimes separates due to the acid in the lime and the protein in the coconut milk. It will not change the flavor, don’t be worried.
